Form I-485 — Adjustment of status

Form I-485 is an application to register permanent residence or adjust status inside the United States. Eligibility depends on the legal basis, entry history, visa availability and admissibility—not just submitting the form.

Purpose and legal basis

INA §245 governs many adjustment applications. The form collects information needed to assess the requested category and possible bars. A marriage-based petition and an adjustment application have different functions. The February 2025 edition transition is a historical event and does not establish which edition USCIS accepts now.

Before filing

Use the official USCIS form page to verify the currently accepted edition, instructions, filing address and fees. Historical announcements may no longer describe today’s requirements. Review signatures, supporting documents and any deadlines before sending a packet. A pending application is not the same as an approved immigration benefit.
