Got a Notice to Appear in Texas? Here is what happens next
Texas has more immigration court locations than almost any state: three in Houston, plus Dallas, San Antonio, El Paso, Harlingen and Laredo, and courts tied to detention centers in Conroe, Pearsall, Los Fresnos and El Paso. Many people detained at the border or moved from other states end up on a Texas docket. Your notice decides which court applies.
A Notice to Appear (Form I-862) starts a deportation case before an immigration judge. Your first hearing is a short master calendar hearing; the decisive one is the individual (merits) hearing, often months or years later. You have the right to a lawyer, but not one paid for by the government.

What to do first
- 1Read the notice. Write down the court, date, time and your A-number, then confirm them in EOIR Automated Case Information or at 1-800-898-7180.
- 2If you have moved, file Form EOIR-33 with the court within five days. Hearing notices go to the address on file, and a missed notice can still lead to a removal order.
- 3Do not miss a hearing. Unless the judge has excused you, you must attend, even with a lawyer. Missing one can mean a removal order in your absence.
- 4Check the asylum deadline. Asylum must generally be filed within one year of arrival, with limited exceptions.
- 5Gather every immigration document you have and speak to a lawyer before the first hearing.
If you or a relative is detained
Detained cases usually move much faster than non-detained ones. Find a relative with the ICE Online Detainee Locator, using an A-number or a name and country of birth. Whether a judge can set bond depends on how the person entered and their history, so ask a lawyer early.
ICE's directory lists these facilities in Texas, among others. A listing does not show that a particular person is held there.
- Montgomery Processing Center (Conroe)
- Joe Corley Processing Center (Conroe)
- South Texas ICE Processing Center (Pearsall)
- Port Isabel Service Processing Center
- El Paso Service Processing Center

How Ace Immigration helps in Texas
Attorney Anna Tsibel has practiced only immigration law for over 15 years and works in Russian and English. She is licensed by the California State Bar; immigration law is federal, so she represents clients in immigration courts nationwide and appears at their hearings herself, in person or by video as the court requires. The firm has no office in Texas; preparation is by video and phone.
No lawyer can promise a result. The outcome depends on the facts, the evidence, current law and the judge. More on deportation defense and our Texas page.
